The Kerala backwaters have their own unique charm. They form a wide network connecting small streams, rivers, lakes, big water pools and puddles. These small water bodies contribute to this network by flowing in from various directions. Some of the backwaters lead to big lakes which end into estuaries. These backwaters were formed by the action of sea water gushing in at various occasions during the tidal changes and due to monsoon changes. This later on formed small channels, deltas, lagoons and lakes. They extend up to 2000 km.
The water bodies are interconnected throughout the coastal line of Kerala. The Kerala backwater tours offer tourists an opportunity to see some of the lovelier Kerala backwaters. Boats, both small and big are a means of water transport and are available for moving up stream and down stream. These water bodies have been a great attraction to the tourists from across the world. The scenic view is mesmerizing to the eyes and along with the plush green environs, the Kerala backwater tour packages are something that must not be missed. The backwaters flow through plains as well as hillsides. The mountains are green and lushly adroned with a fresh breathtaking feel. It is a magnificent panoramic view to observe this scenic beauty. Time, truly comes to a stand still!
Some of the famous Kerala backwaters are the 'Ashtamudi', 'Vembanad', 'Punnamada', 'Champakulam', 'Thothapalli', etc. Of these Vembanad and Ashtamudi are the largest backwaters. They connect the Arabian Sea at three to four different estuaries. The Vembanad and Ashtamudi come to Kollam and Kochi. The Thothapalli backwaters connect the sea at Kovalam at Tiruvanthapuram. The Vembanad Lake has its origin which dates back historically to 1866 A.D. where the whole place was flooded. The Kerala backwater tour packages are available at all KTDC (Kerala Tourist Development Corporation) offices at all major cities, bus stations and railway stations. Famous Kerala backwater resorts are located at Alleppey, Kumarakom, Thothapalli, Kollam, etc.
The people of Kerala depend on these water bodies as a major source of income. They undertake farming and fishing, transporting raw materials, etc through these water channels. Boathouses made of strong teak woods thatched with palm and coconut leaves serve as a water transport vehicle. It is a great attraction for people to travel in these boathouses and they form an important part of the Kerala Backwater Tours. Living in a boathouse is a unique experience by itself. In the local language, it is known as 'Ketuvallam'. The stay in a ketuvallam is equivalent to a 5 star Kerala backwater resort.
The boathouse offers good basic facilities and amenities. Each room has a scenic view which changes as the boat moves. They are traditionally furnished with the best available raw materials which are processed and painted. They include bamboo poles, coconut fiber, ropes, bamboo mats and carpets. This gives a fresh feel as one is close to nature. One can spend a quiet life and feel the serenity away from the busy hectic life of the city, if one becomes a part of the Kerala backwater tour packages. Grab your chance to spend great vacations, rejuvenate yourself and have a feel of rebirth in God's own country!
